I don't routinely prescribe a lot of supplements. Whenever possible, I like to treat dogs with whole food diets.
However, I recommend these three supplements for all dogs.
- Milk Thistle. This herb supports your dog’s liver. The liver helps detoxify the body and metabolize drugs and food. I use Rx Vitamins for Pets Hepatosupport.
- Fish Oil. This oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help decrease inflammation in the body. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can help arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, heart disease and more. For dogs that are not allergic to fish, I use Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Pet.
- Probiotics. The bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract heavily influences digestion, hormone balance and immune function. The balance of the bacteria is the cornerstone of health. Adding a good dose of bacteria can make a huge difference in your dog’s overall health. I recommend Vetriscience’s Vetri Mega Probiotic.
As always, work with your veterinarian when adding supplements to your dog’s diet. I would love to hear from you! Please comment below.
