The Tails of Truth Podcast:
We Need to Talk About Anesthesia-Free Dentals for Pets
Anesthetic-Free Dentistry: What It Does, What It Misses, and What to Do Instead
Anesthetic-free dentistry is one of the most heavily marketed services in the pet wellness space right now with pop-ups at groomers and pet stores, offering to clean your dog's or cat's teeth for $200-$300 without any anesthesia. The before-and-after photos are stunning. The pitch is compelling. And if you've ever worried about the cost or risk of putting your pet under, the appeal makes complete sense.
But here's what the marketing doesn't say: it's cosmetic. The majority of dental disease in dogs and cats lives below the gum line, in places an awake scaling procedure cannot reach and cannot assess. No x-rays. No subgingival cleaning. No way to know what's actually happening with the structure of your pet's teeth.
In this episode, Dr. Angie and JoJo break it all the way down:
- What anesthetic-free (awake) scaling actually does and doesn't do
- Why "board certified veterinarians" in marketing copy is not the same as a veterinary dental specialist
- The pattern Dr. Angie saw repeatedly in practice: years of regular anesthetic-free cleanings followed by extensive extractions
- Why this procedure is better understood as "cosmetic scaling" than dentistry
- The B+ home care routine that genuinely supports your pet's oral health between professional cleanings
- Why twilight sedation is worth asking your vet about if cost or anesthesia fear has been the barrier
- How to advocate for your pet at home including what to look for when you check your pet's mouth once a week
No shame here. If you've been doing this for your pet, you were following the guidance of a very effective marketing campaign. This episode is just the other side of that conversation.
