CBD Dosing for Dogs: Choosing & Calculating the Right Dose

cannabis cbd dogs dosing correctly boulderholisticvet blog post

In this article, I am going to walk you through how to calculate a dose of CBD for your dog.

My favorite CBD product is HempRx by Rx Vitamins for Pets. For small dogs, I recommend starting with the HempRx Soft Chewz or the HempRx oil. If your pup is 20 lb or larger, I recommend using the HempRx Forte to save money. This version is twice as concentrated with over twice the volume.

Products with high levels of CBD are expensive.

For this reason, it is most economical to find the smallest dose that is effective for your dog. There are no industry wide established doses for dogs currently. As the cannabis market expands, more resources will be dedicated to research in optimal dosing for dogs.

Choosing A Dose

I start with 0.2 mg/kg twice daily and work up to 0.5 mg/kg or higher twice daily. The HempRx Soft Chewz for Small Dogs contains 1 mg per chew, while the HempRx Soft Chewz for Dogs contains 3 mg per chew. HempRx oil contains 0.5 mg per drop and the HempRx Forte contains 1 mg per drop.

It is safe to increase the dose past 0.5 mg/kg twice daily. Often for pain, seizures or severe inflammatory disease, I increase to 2-3 mg/kg twice daily. For reference, all of my animals are on 2 mg/kg or more twice daily. I definitely have the HempRx Forte in my fridge! If your dog tolerates CBD, the only downsides to a higher dose, is a higher cost.

Calculating a Dose

If you want to skip the calculations, I have a dosing chart here. However, if you want to calculate the dose yourself, here is how.

Step 1: Convert your pup’s weight from pounds (lbs) to kilograms (kg). You can do this by dividing the weight in pounds by 2.2. Let’s start with an 40 lb dog.

40lb (division sign) 2.2 = 18 kg

Step 2: Multiply the number of milligrams (mg) in the dose by the number of kilograms (kg). If the dose is 0.2 mg/kg, you would multiply 18 kg x 0.2 mg to get 3.6 mg. I would round this up to 4 mg.

0.2 mg x 18 kg = 3.6 mg per dose, round to 4 mg per dose

Step 3: Use the concentration of the CBD product you are using to calculate the volume of oil you should administer. Depending on the product you are using, this is easier said than done. If you are using HempRx or HempRx Forte, it’s REALLY simple! HempRx has 0.5 mg per drop. HempRx Forte has 1 mg per drop. For example if you need to give your pup 4 mg of CBD twice daily. You could use 8 drops of the HempRx or 4 drops of the HempRx Forte twice daily.

If you are using another product, you need to know how many milligrams (mg) of CBD is in each milliliter (mL) of oil. Unfortunately there are a few companies that refuse to disclose this information. It is impossible to know if the dose you are using is therapeutic. For this reason, I don’t recommend these products.

Once you know how many milligrams of CBD are in each milliliter (ml) you can calculate the dose volume. For example, HempRx has 15 mg of CBD per milliliter (mL) of oil. If I have calculated my dose to 4 mg of CBD twice daily, I simply divide 4 by 15 to get the number of milliliters of oil I need to give my kitty.

HempRx has 15 mg/ml of CBD Dose of CBD is 4 mg twice daily 4 mg (divided by sign) 15 mg = 0.266 ml Dosing past one tenth of a milliliter is difficult. Don’t do it!

I would round 0.266 mls to 0.3 mls. For this volume, you could use a 1 milliliter syringe and draw back to 0.3 mL mark. If you prefer to use the dropper in the bottle, you could estimate a third of the dropper. This assumes the dropper holds 1 mL of liquid. For reference 1 milliliter (mL) is equal to a cc.

Is your head spinning with numbers and units of measurements yet? Feel free to post questions in the comments below!

  1. I have a shepherd malamute mix who suffers from cluster seizures. He has been on phenobarbital for a couple years but we still can’t seem to stop the seizures all together. What dose of CBD is recommended in conjunction with the phenobarbital?

    Thank you !

  2. Lauren Wozniacki

We bought Ellevet chews and I discovered the overall dose for a large dog was around 19mg per chew. It was actually recommended to give 2 chews twice a day as a loading dose. We gave 1 chew twice daily for about 5 days and our 14 year old husky mix definitely seemed off. He sleeps alot to begin with but changed his routine and had less energy. So we started to 3rd the chews to give approximately 6ish mg and I decided to just try at night for now. He has had nasal cancer (treated), has larpar (golpp) and mild arthritis. It may be helping with his gagging from larpar. Is this an ok way to go about this? also, is it recommended to recheck bloodwork after starting CBD, due to liver enzyme’s potentially increasing?

    1. Hi Lauren,

Yes, I definitely do! You know your pup less, and while there are “recommended dose” guidelines, it’s possible your pup is sensitive and needs a smaller amount.

I hope this helps and that you found the magic milligrams that he needs!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  3. Hello, I know this should be simple, but the dosing chart seems to vary from the calculation for me. My pup is 3.5 years old with arthritis that I’m trying to help. She is 51 pounds. Using, the calculation, that comes to 12 drops 2x a day (I bought HempRX Forte), correct? That’s the maximum dosage on the dosing chart, so I wanted to make sure I was calculating correctly. Thank you so much for your help…I’m really looking forward ot starting her on this and hoping it helps!

    1. Hi Melissa,

Funny, I just emailed you back! 😛

My email contains a lot more information, but yes, you are right on! A 0.50mg/kg twice daily dosing (the “high end” of our dosing chart) comes to 12mg/12 drops of CBD twice daily for your girl. However, there is room to work up.

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  4. Hi there,
My dog weighs 28 lbs and has Cushing’s disease. Will cbd oil help relieve any of her symptoms? I just started her on vetoryl but concerned about the side affects. Would I give her more than the recommended dose because of the cushing’s?

  5. Hello,
I have a pit bull who is 10 with arthritis in his legs. He weighs 82 pounds. I want to ween him off the anti inflammatory pills he is on and switch to this approach. I bought CBD oil 1000mg full spectrum hemp extract. Ingredients are cold pressed olive oil and full spectrum hemp extract. Contains less than .3% THC. The supplement facts state serving size is 25.05mg per half dropper, contains 40 servings. How much would you recommend I give my dog daily?

    1. Hi Vicky,

      Great questions!

Have you read Dr. Angie’s holistic approach to arthritis? If not, you can find it here. We also have an arthritis bundle, which has Dr. Angie’s go-to supplements for arthritis, which includes CBD.

To answer your dosing question, we usually suggest starting with 0.50mg/kg twice daily. For your pup’s weight (82 pounds or 37 kg), that is 18mg twice daily. However you can work all the way up to 2mg/kg twice daily if needed.

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  6. I was wondering about dosing strength and frequency. My 18-year-old labrador mix has CCD, which has suddenly become much worse in recent weeks. He incessantly spins in circles, whines and cries, and has accidents in the house at all hours of the day and night. His vet prescribed Selegiline and Gabapentin, which doesn’t seem to help his symptoms at all. About a week ago, I started him on CBD from Innovet. They recommend dosing every 6 to 8 hours. I noticed you recommend a 12 hour dosing schedule. Is there a benefit to giving him a higher dose twice a day vs. a lower dose multiple times per day?

On the dosage amount, I am still figuring out what will be effective for him. I started the CBD at the manufacturer’s recommended minimum dose for his size (2 mg, 4 times a day) about a week ago. I have gradually increased his dosage – the last dose was 11 mg (he’ll get 44 mg today), which still does not seem to help his symptoms. According to Innovet’s dosage chart, he can have up to 87 mg/day. I saw that you allow up to 3 mg/kg twice a day, which for him would be 105 mg/day, so I know I have some room to keep adjusting his dosage upward. I’m wondering if I should go ahead and jump his dosage up significantly, or keep moving it up in small increments?

    1. My dog has been diagnosed with an 8 cm tumor on her liver and to 3 cm tumors on her adrenal glands. She weighs 16 pounds. I bought RSO oil however is mostly THC. She is not in pain but should I give her CBD instead?

      1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

        Hi Margaret,

I am so sorry to hear about your dog’s diagnosis. I know this is a scary and stressful time. RSO oil does have a lot of THC. Dogs are more sensitive to THC than humans. It’s impossible to know exactly how uncomfortable THC could be making your pup. When THC is legalized, there may be opportunity for research to be done to understand if and how THC has a therapeutic place in canine medicine. Until then, I recommend using full spectrum hemp extract that is rich in CBD and other therapeutic components. I would start with 3-5 mg of CBD twice daily. I would start with HempRx for Cats because it’s a smaller bottle. Three to five mg would be 3-5 drops.

        Sending love,

        Dr. Angie

        Sending you

  7. Do you have any experience treating dementia/Sundowners with CBD? I have two 16 year old chihuahuas. One is experiencing nighttime sleep issues, the other may have Sundowners, he gets agitated late afternoon until he goes to bed for the night. Would CBD be something to try? One weighs about 5 pounds, the other 2-3 pounds. Thanks.

    1. Hi Jody,

      This is a great question.

Many times, CBD can help take the edge off of the anxiety that comes with these conditions and age-related developments. It also can help aid in their comfort and increase restfulness/promote a sense of well-being.

Your pups are so itty-bitty! The good news is that the CBD dose will be small and therefore affordable! We usually suggest starting at 0.50mg/kg twice daily and working up from there. For your 5 pound (2.27kg) pup, this is 1mg twice daily. For your 3 pound (1.36kg), this is 0.6mg twice daily. Again, you can work up from there!

I hope this helps! Sending you lots of love!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  8. Would you use a CBD Isolate or Full Spectrum? I have both at my shop. Dog has kidney issues. Been giving 12-16mg 2x a day. Been having periodic seizures lasting 20-30 secs due to kidneys failing.

        1. Hi Lill,

          Great question!

Have you read Dr. Angie’s article discussing her holistic approach to seizures? It is here.

She starts with 0.50mg/kg twice daily. For your friend’s pup’s weight, that is 25mg twice daily. However, you can work all the way up to 2mg/kg twice daily if needed.

          I hope this helps!

          Warmly,
          Claire

  9. Hello!
Thank you for all of the information you have provided! I have a 2 year old Australian Shepard mix that started suffering from seizures in March. They started out about every 8 weeks and now we are at to just over 4 weeks. Our vet does not want to do any testing until at least one a month.

We have decided to start cbd oil. We started at 5mg twice a day (he’s 45 lbs) 2 days ago. He had another seizure this morning and I was wondering how long does it take to notice results and is my dose way to low for his weight? I wanted to start him slow but I’m wondering if my dose is worthless!

    Thank you!

  10. I have a 75 lb shepard mix and she is aggressive to cats. Like a hunter instinct. Would CBD help mellow her out? If so how much should I give her?
Thanks so much for any help,
    Stacy

    1. Hi Stacy,

It’s really hard to know if CBD would help with something so instinctual. We have not used it in cases like this that often!

It can help with reducing anxiety! For large pups, we usually suggest HempRx Forte and our dosing chart is here.

It’s totally possible you’re already going down this route, but I would also suggest a trainer who focuses on positive reinforcement!

Good luck and keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  11. Jennifer Hallett

Rescued Two black lab mix(?)-male(2-3yo) and a female (4-5yo). Using another brand of CBD isolate that’s 500mg/ml of CBD. Wondering where to start with dosing For skin issues, anxiety and digestion as these are all tied together? Male is 69lbs or 31.36kg and Female is 90lbs or 40.91kg. Thanx in advance!

  12. Hi
I have a small chihuahua 10 years old and her has anxiety issues. Can’t even go for walk barking non stop. Or shaking crazy when eats like she is terrified from her food or when I want to pet her :(((
I purchased 30 ml bottle cbd / mtc oil /500 mg cbd Contant on bottle .
I tried to figure out her dosage but every website sais differently .
    Any advise ? Thank you

    1. Hi Meli,

I am so sorry to hear that your pup struggles so greatly with anxiety, it is so hard to feel that anxious.

We usually recommend starting with 0.25mg/kg – 0.50mg/kg of CBD twice daily, and you can work up from there if needed. How much does your girl weigh?

      Hugs,
      Claire

          1. Adriana Chiappini Burkhart

I have an 18 to 20 pound pug who SNORES like crazy. My husband purchased CBD 8 mg of CBD per millimeter. How much should I give him? The bottle also says 120 mg.

  13. My Boston Terrier was treated here in Westminster by a new vet to us. She had developed mucoid diarrhea. A blood test showed she probably had Addisons disease. $700.00 dollars later she is no better. In fact she is worse. She had developed what I thought was a seizure (5-6 times) and no real help with her diarrhea . I saw your site and started her on CBD oil 2mg twice a day. She weighs 28 lbs. The seizure activity stopped but the diarrhea has not. She now has muscle weakness and has trouble walking and squatting for urination and defecation. I am wondering what can we give her for the diarrhea? The vet we saw told us to stop the rice and boiled chicken as it does not work. What over the counter meds might help with her diarrhea ? Thanks for any guidance .`

    1. Hi Tom!

I’m so sorry that after so much medical care, your sweet pup is still not feeling well. So stressful!

It’s so hard to know what will help your pup’s diarrhea without seeing her and knowing her full medical history. What next steps is your veterinarian suggesting? Have you considered adding a veterinary internal medicine specialist onto your team?

      Will you keep us posted?!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  14. Hi!

I have an almost 2 year old labradoodle who is 80 lbs and is suffering from seizures. I recently bought a 40 ml bottle and it has 250 mg of CBD. I was planning on dosing twice daily but unsure as to how much to give him, any guidance is welcome.

    Thank you,

    1. Hi Sarah,

I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s seizures. So stressful and scary.

Do you know how many milligrams of CBD are in each drop or milliliter of your CBD product? We generally suggest starting at 0.25mg-0.50mg/kg of CBD twice daily. For your pup’s weight, this is 9mg-18mg of CBD twice daily.

I hope this helps! Will you keep us posted?

      Big hugs,
      Claire

  15. Hi there! I was wondering if you could recommend what I can give my 25 lb Bichon:/ Shitzu. He is 14 and has weakened ligaments in his front leg. He limps all the time even though he’s on medication. He takes Galiliprant. I was going to start him on the chews First question … is it safe to take with this medication. Also is this product thc free? If it is, do these products work just as good as the ones that aren’t ? Thanks so much for your time.

  16. I have a 10 year old+ chihuahua that is a rescue so I’m not sure of her exact age. She has started having major anxiety issues. This just started about a year ago. I adopted her 8 years ago. She pants and trembles until she is removed from whatever causes the anxiety like riding in a car or from loud noises. For instance when the wind blows and she hears unfamiliar noises. These things never bothered her until a year ago. . I recently ordered the pet hemp oil 12000 MG. How much do you recommend I start giving her ?

    1. Hi Joe,

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet girl’s anxiety. That is so hard!

We usually suggest starting with 0.25mg/kg – 0.50mg/kg of CBD twice daily and you can work up from there if needed.

What dose did you end up starting and how is she doing?

      Big hugs,
      Claire

  17. Jennifer Baker-Huotari

How many cbd drop should i give my 10 yr old overweight (80 lb) yellow lab a day? He has hip. And stomach issues.

  18. Hi! My 70lb Shepard was just spayed and is on 50mg Rimadyl 2X a day fro 3 days. Can I continue to give 4-6 mg CBD Zen Dog biscuits while she’s on the Rimadyl?
    Thx so much.

  19. What guidance is there on CBD use prior to anesthesia for spaying? I have a 10 lb Coton who has separation anxiety and so will try CBD chews and wonder how many days prior to surgery we should stop.

  20. I have a 8 lb yorkie that was recently diagnosed with congestive heart failure. My son bought some CBD oil at a local dispensary but I don’t know the strength or how much to give her. It is Lo Drops made by Hashishans if that helps? Thank you!

    1. Hi Jerryl,

I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s diagnosis. Have you consulted with a veterinary cardiologist to join your pup’s team?

We usually recommend starting with 0.25-0.50mg/kg twice daily. For your pup’s weight, this is 1mg-2mg of CBD twice daily.

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

      1. Yes, as a matter of fact we have seen the veterinary cardiologist and she is currently on 4 different heart medications. She has syncope when she gets excited and I’m hoping the CBD will help calm her down a bit and therefore reduce the occurrences of the syncope.

        Thank you for your help,
        Jerryl

  21. So I have a cbd that’s medical grade
90 mg per tbls and its reasonable
    I got it from thehealingcowgirl.com
But my question is your dosing is so low
My dog has cancer I was told to do tablespoons then work up to 4 tbls that’s 360 mg way less than your 4
Or is it because my dog has cancer ?

    1. Hi Brenda!

I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s cancer diagnosis.

For cancer, we generally suggest starting with 0.50mg/kg twice daily on day 1, working to 1mg/kg twice daily by day 3. You can certainly increase from there if needed.

I hope that this helps! Big hugs!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  22. My 15 yo 80 lb dog has severe arthritis pain. The dose only lasts about 4 hours and then she gets to panting and lip smacking and sometimes whimpers when getting up. When I give her another dose in 20 minutes she is ok again and even gets up and down without issues and wants to go out and walk. Will the more frequent dose harm her ??

  23. Our 14 year old pug started having seizures. Our vet wasn’t very encouraging when we asked about using CBD oils, but we tried it and for the past 4 months he’s only had a 3 episodes. Although in the past week he’s had 4 seizures. So we think we need to increase his dosage. We put him on CBD oil that is 0.5 mg per drop and we’ve been giving him 6 drops twice a day. Could you recommend what we can safely increase his dosage to? I tried to figure out the numbers and head was spinning.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Heather,

Thank you for reaching out! I’m so sorry to hear about your pup’s seizures (and recent increase in seizure activity).

We usually recommend starting with 0.25mg-0.50mg/kg of CBD twice daily. However, you can easily double this dose if and when needed. How much does your pup weigh? I’d be happy to help calculate this dose for you!

      Big hugs,
      Claire

  24. I have a 6 1/2 year old cocker spaniel, and he takes phenobarbital every day, but continues to have seizures. I have told the vet, but they don’t seemed concerned.. yet… he takes 1.5 pills in the am and 1 pill at night. I would love to try CBD in gummy form for him. I think I should contact my vet first, but what do you think? Thanks. Judy Gordon

    1. Hi Judy,

      Thank you for reaching out!

We have certainly seen CBD help with seizures, and there are studies (recently a CSU study) done showing improvement in dogs with seizures when using CBD.

For small dogs, we recommend HempRx and our dosing chart is here.

If you try CBD, will you keep us posted on how it helps?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  25. We have a Golden Retriever who is started having seizures which possibly could be a brain tumour. I’m picking up some Charlotte’s Web tomorrow. Does 8 to 16 drops seem like enough if it turns up to be cancer?

  26. Hi i have a 13-14 year old border collie with some pretty severe arthritis/inflammation throughout her body. She is currently 28.20kg I have a 15ml bottle (150mg) of cbd that says 1ml=10mg / 20 drops = 1ml
How many drops should i be giving her a day?

  27. Karen Craver Stansbury

Our 2 year old Bernedoodle has epilepsy. He experienced his second seizure today, after the first one just weeks ago. We are devastated, to say the least. Our daughter lives in Castle Rock and suggested cbd thc as an alternative to the phenobarbital recommended by our Vet in Texas. We would gladly pay for a telephone consult to get alternative treatment advice for our Riley.

  28. I have pure 1000mg CBD for humans, and I would like to give it to my old redbone coonhound who weighs about 60 pounds. Can you give me some idea how much I can give her to start?
    Thanks

  29. I’m using hemprx for a dog with seizures and a “suspicious mass” on his brain thought to be a tumor. I’m confused about how much to use.

    1. Hi Nicole!

I would suggest calling the company and asking them how many milligrams (mg) of CBD are in each drop. From there, you can figure out how much he would need! We generally recommend starting with 0.25mg-0.50mg/kg twice daily. For you pup’s weight, this is 7-14 mg of CBD twice daily!

I hope that this helps! Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  30. Hello

I have a 165lb Great Dane that unfortunately has developed wobblers syndrome I am trying desperately to find the right dosage of a quality CBD oil. I have already purchased the oil I just need to know the correct dosage. EVERY dosage chart for dogs I have found online (including this one) falls short of the answers I need!
    * I have several bottles of (500mg) CBD oil
    * My dog is 165 lbs

Every chart I find (does not) display the CBD strength 125mg, 250mg, 500mg, 750mg and so on ,then the correct ML dose!
Every chart I have found completely skips the 500mg
Can anyone clear this up for me PLEASE!

    1. Hi Mike,

      Good question!

Each products total mg of CBD will be dependent. For example, with the products we sell, the HempRx contains a total of 450mg of CBD and the HempRx Forte contains 1800mg of CBD. The most important information, however, is how many mg of CBD are in each drop or ml (there is 0.50mg of CBD/drop in the HempRx and 1mg of CBD/drop in the Forte).

The more concentrated the product, the smaller the dose you will give – which is mainly important for extra large breeds like your pup!

Will the product that you purchased let you know how many mg of CBD are in each drop or ml? From there, you can calculate how many drops (or mls for your big pup!) to give per dosing. We recommend starting with 0.25-0.50mg/kg twice daily.

I hope that this information is helpful!

      Warmly,
      Claire

      1. Claire

Thank you so much for responding, unfortunately I am no clearer to understanding the correct dosage for my big guy. The bottle says it is 500mg so I assume that means it is 500mg per drop! I just don’t understand why this has to be so complicated.

        500mg CBD oil + 165 lb dog
= how many drops per day????

  31. I’m using CBD for my 15 yo Pom/Toy Poodle mix who has anxiety and poor appetite. All this in the setting of kidney disease (creatinine 1.8 in Dec 2019), and history of epilepsy on zonisamide 25mg twice daily. I’m hoping to take him off the zonisamide altogether and just use CBD for seizure control, anxiety and appetite. He seems a little more sedated using both of them at the same time. Would you say the 2-3mg/kg dosing is still safe in the setting of kidney disease, at least at this stage? Thanks so much in advance, I understand CBD is relatively new on the scene and most vets don’t know how to counsel clients on this!

    1. Hi Amanda,

      Thank you for reaching out!

For CBD dosing, we usually recommend starting with 0.25mg-0.50mg/kg of CBD. How much does your pup weigh? Have you decided on a product to use?

For small dogs, we recommend starting with HempRx and our dosing chart is here.

There are a lot of ways that CBD may be of beneficial! We’d love ot hear an update if you give it a try!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  32. My 12 year old lab/pit bull mix had a stroke and is now recovered ad well as he can , but he now pants and paces, not able to sit or lay comfortably. He is 52 pounds. Would you recommend a dosage please?

  33. I have a Corgi ( not sure what other mix is) . He weighs about 50lbs. He has anxiety really bad when I leave the house at any given time.. He also doesn’t like strangers and noise. I got the CBD oil 125mg and the 10 drops it call for once a day doesn’t seem to quite help him. Can I increase his dosage ?

    1. Hi Jamie,

      Good question!

What is the product, and can they tell you how many mg of CBD are in each drop? For your pup’s weight, we would suggest starting with 6-12mg of CBD twice daily. However, you can absolutely double that dose (24mg twice daily) if needed.

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  34. He is also on potassium bromide 500. mg 1 a day and zeppra er 4 750 mg tablets 2 a day and the seizures are progressively getting worse. Please help.

  35. My St. Betnard is currently recovering from liver damage due to zomisimide. His current liver bilirubin was 1.1 as of last Friday. my question is how does cbd effect his liver

    1. Hi Tonia,

This is a really great question.

The truth is, we don’t know specifics on how CBD may effect the liver. There are very few studies published on CBD and dogs, but there will surely be more to come! That said, there is evidence that one liver value is effected (can increase) when CBD is used.

I would recommend working closely with your veterinarian. If you do decide to try CBD, your vet may want to monitor bloodwork a bit closer.

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  36. Kimberly Baltzell

I have a 95-100 lb Sherpherd/Hound/Pointer mix that suffers from epilepsy. He currently takes 4500mgs of Keppra XR (6 pills) and 259.20 mgs of Phenobartital (4 pills) daily and it is not working. He is still having seizures and they are lasting up to an hour. I’ve heard others have had success with CBD so I started doing some research on it. I would really like to ween him from the pills and only do CBD, but not sure if that will work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Kimberly,

I am so sorry to hear about your pups seizures. I know it must be so stressful and scary when your pup goes through these long seizure episodes.

For large dogs, we recommend HempRx Forte and our dosing chart is here. For animals on anticonvulsants, we usually start at the low end of the dose.

I would definitely work with your pup’s veterinarian in regards to weening off of his other medications. If you haven’t yet added a veterinary neurologist on board, it may be a great addition to your guy’s team.

I hope that this information is helpful! Big hugs.

      Warmly,
      Claire

    1. Hi Tonia,

I am so sorry to hear about your pups seizures!

For large dogs, we recommend HempRx Forte and our dosing chart is here. Your pup’s weight actually exceeds our dosing chart. 🙂 However, we would recommend starting with 36-72mg of CBD twice daily. This is roughly 1-2ml of CBD twice daily.

I hope that this information is helpful! Please keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  37. I am so confused for the dosage. My bottle is
    30ml/300mg CBD
Then the back of the bottle says
10 drops contain 0.5 ml and
    CBD 5mg.

I am just trying to figure out how many drops
For a chow chow. My moms dog is old and has arthritis and getting dementia. We are trying to see if this could help.

    1. Hi Misty,

It does get a little confusing!

To confirm, your product has 5mg of CBD in each 10 drops?

How much does your pup weigh? For example, if your pup is 60#, our dosing chart would recommend 6-12mg of CBD twice daily. So with the low end dose, and using the product you have, you would want to give approximately 10-20 drops twice daily.

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  38. Hi

My 167 pound Great Dane has osteosarcoma. He has had amputation and is doing chemo. He also has mild Wobblers. He seems to feel good, and is getting around well. I am hoping CBD might fight cancer although I know that can’t be assured. Can you recommend a product and dosage for him?

    1. Hi Taz,

Wow, thank you for catching this! It shouldn’t be!

The maximum dose should be double the dose of the minimum dose (for example, if the minimum dose is 1ml, the maximum would be 2ml).

I hope this helps, and thank you again for bringing this to our attention!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  39. My dog weighs 6 lbs. The CBD level is 20.7/ml.
The thc is .78mg/ml. What dosage might be appropriate to start with? He is also on phenobarbital 15 mg.

  40. I have a golden retriever that has cancer and is having seizers from it. I want to try cbd gummies or oil. He weighs between 50 and 60 lbs how much should I give him

    1. Hi Misty,

I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s cancer diagnosis and seizures.

Here is our dosing chart. On the far left, you’ll see the CBD dosing for non-HempRx products. This is the column for you! For your pup’s weigh, we would start with 6-12mg twice daily. Usually for cancer patients (at your dog’s weight), we would start with 6 drops twice daily on day 1, working up to 12 drops twice daily by day 3.

I sure hope this helps! Will you keep us posted?

      Hugs,
      Claire

  41. Hello Dr. Angie my dog has been having pain and the vets don’t know what’s causing it now she been throwing up and literally falling over can’t breathe from the foamy substance that gets stuck we have tried so many meds and it’s getting worse I was told to try CBD oil I purchased the trublu the bottle is 250 mg the dropper says 1ml how much CBD do I give my 14 pound pug / Chihuahua mix how many droppers full 1 or half I’m not sure please help. Sincerely worried pet mom

    1. Hi Anika,

I am so sorry to hear that your pup is so sick! Have you veterinarians made any further suggestions for diagnostics or plans to go forward? How scary!

Here is our dosing chart. For your pup’s weight, we would start at 1.5-3 mg of CBD twice daily.

Are you able to call the CBD company and ask them how many mg of CBD are in each drop? That information will be so helpful for you! Without it, we really can’t know how much many drops to give!

      Hugs,
      Claire

  42. I am ” old school” and find these metric conversions from millimeters to milligrams confusing! How many millilitres of cbd can I give to a 95lb golden retriever.? To all math people, I appreciate the help. Please don’t ask me to convert….just need to know millilitres.
    Thanks

  43. Hi I have a 20kg, 9 year old female German Shep and she is experiencing joint pain. I bought 100mg CBD oil that has 3.3mg of CBD per 1ml (15 drops). Please help and let me know how much CBD oil I can give her per day

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Deidre,

Unfortunately the product you are using isn’t very concentrated. For a 20 kg pup, I would start with 10 mg of CBD twice daily. This would be 3 mls of the product you are using twice daily. For big dogs it’s better to purchase a more concentrated product. For example, HempRx Forte has 30 mg per 1 ml of oil. I hope that helps!

      Warmly,
      Dr. Angie

  44. Adopted a 15 lb bichon from the local shelter. He is very fearful. It is obvious he was abused during his first 3 years of life.(guestimate) I have some 250 mg cannabidol oil and am math challenged and cannot figure out the dosage. Please help. Thanks

    1. Hi Kay,

The math can get confusing! Have you checked out our dosing chart here. For your pup’s weight, we would start with 1.5-3mg of CBD twice daily. Will the company/brand of the CBD bottle you have tell you how many mg of CBD are in each drop? From there, you can know how many drops to give your boy.

I hope CBD helps! Please keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  45. I have a 12 yo Golden Retreiver with mild seizures, unpredictable. I also have HempMy Pet CBD Oil with a dropper in ml. Danny is 94lbs: how much should I start him off at in ml? so confusing.

  46. Hi, I’m terrible at maths and am totally lost with the calculations. I need it in simple terms, how many drops, how many times a day. I have an 8 year old American bulldog cross staffy who weighs 30kg, he has just been diagnosed with mast cell cancer (I’m hoping to of caught it early) so I have rushed out a brought a 10ml bottle of 10% CBD, 1000mg. I have no idea what any of that means though, please could you help me in terms of how many drops and how often.
    Many thanks
    Amy

    1. Hi Amy,

I get it! The math can be confusing! I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s mast cell cancer – but I am hopeful that you caught it early too.

For cancer patients, we usually start at 0.50mg/kg twice daily on day 1 and work up to 1mg/kg twice daily by day 3. For your pup’s weight that is 15mg twice daily on day 1, and 30 mg twice daily by day 3.

Does the bottle you purchased have the amount of milligrams of CBD per drop? This is the information that you will need! If you call them, will they tell you? From there, you can figure out how much your pup needs based off of the dosing above.

I hope this helps! Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  47. I did the math based on Forte for my 98 pound dog but I come up with 45 mg per dose which is way more than the Pet Dosing Chart indicates. Am I calculating something wrong? Here’s my math: 98#/2 = 44.5kg. 1.0mg x 44.5kg = 44.5 (45mg per dose). This would be 45 drops. The 90# weight dosage is 10-20 drops and 110 weight dosage is 13-25 drops. Please help. I’m confused!

  48. My beagle is 14 years old and is drinking and urinating every 2 hours. She was tested for cushings and has had blood work done. The vet has been trying to figure this out but has no answers. I started her on the paws chews givng her 1/4 chew twice a day at 10mg of cbd per chew. she weights 28 pounds. Does this seem to be ok. I have some hemp drops but she hates the drops cuz they are mint flavored. I don’t think hemp oil contains real cbd.. your thoughts

    1. Hi Cynthia,

      Good question!

Here is our dosing chart! For her weight, we would recommend 3-6mg of CBD twice daily. So 1/4 of the chews that you are using would be 2.5mg (the very low end). You could definitely work up to 1/2 chew if you wanted or needed to!

CBD is a derivative of the hemp plant! The HempRx that we carry has 0.50mg of CBD per drop.

I hope this helps! Keep us posted!

      Hugs,
      Claire

  49. Hello, I have a human grade 30ml cbd bottle of 1000 mg of cbd with 33.33 mg per ml. My dog weighs 48 lbs how much cbd do I give him? I do not have a syringe but I can buy one if necessary. The dropper that comes in the bottle goes up in increments of .25, .50, .75 , 1.0 ml

  50. Hi there,

I have two dogs with epilepsy that I want to use CBD with. Im a little confused with the math 🙂 The chart says for my 9lb shitzu to do 1-2 mg twice a day and my 12 pomeranian 1.5-2.5mg twice a day. However when I do the math in the article Im getting 8mg twice a day for the shitzu and 11mg for the pomeranian? What am I doing wrong? Thank you so much for your help!!!!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Bryana,

      Great questions!

Here is our dosing chart. Are you making sure that you are converting their weight in pounds to kilograms by dividing their weight in pounds by 2.2? For example, your 8 pound pup is 3.6kg and your 12 pound pup is 5.5kg. If you are giving 0.50mg/kg twice daily you will multiple 0.50 by their weight in kilograms to get the milligrams needed twice daily.

      I hope I didn’t confuse you even more. 😛

      Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  51. Hi, My 4 yo is 104 lbs. I bought CBD that is 18.5mg/ml. I’m from Canada so I just bought from the licensed shop and did not get a pet version. my vet recommended I not. How much of a dose should I be giving her? she has a torn acl and is on 6 weeks rest before we determine if she needs surgery. this would be number two for her.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Kay,

I am so sorry to hear about your pup’s ACL tear.

Here is our dosing chart. We recommend starting with 0.50mg/kg twice daily and working up from there (if needed).

I hope that this helps! Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  52. Dr. Angie,
Thank you for this great article! I am looking for some information on using CBD as a way to treat my dog’s situational anxiety during thunderstorms. I am having some difficulty finding if CBD is something I’d give him at the onset of his anxiety or if it is something I’d give him daily in hopes of helping with the situations that make him anxious. I’m not looking for him to be extra mellow or tired, just trying to find a way to calm him during storms. Please let me know how you would recommend dosing CBD for him. Thank you!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Erica,

      Great question!

We see CBD be a huge help with anxiety in dogs! People often use it as needed (prior to the stressful event) as opposed to daily. That said, it wouldn’t be wrong to give it daily either.

For small dogs, we usually recommend HempRx and for medium/large sized dogs we recommend HempRx Forte. Our dosing chart is here. The good news is, there’s quite a bit of wiggle room with dosing if needed.

If you try CBD for your pup, will you keep us posted on how it helps?!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  53. Michelle Abracinskas

Hi, my beagle has sore ACLs in both legs and the vet recommended CBD oil but it is very confusing. Sadie is 49 lbs and a year old, what would you recommend?
Thank you so much for your time, michelle

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Michelle,

      Thank you for reaching out!

For medium/large size dogs, we usually recommend the HempRx Forte. Because it is double the concentration of the HempRx, and the bottle is over twice as large, it is more economical for larger pups. Our dosing chart is here.

We also offer CBD nurse phone consults, which you can purchase here.

Will you keep us posted on how the CBD helps if you try it?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  54. Hi. The CBD oil I have is 9.93 mg/ml. How much would I give to a 60 lb Chow

I’m using Edison Cannabis. She is threatened by storms and fireworks

    Thank you
    Gerri

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Gerri,

      Thank you for reaching out!

Here is our dosing chart. For your sized pup, we would recommend starting with 0.25-0.50mg/kg twice daily. This equals 6-12mg twice daily. You could always make it easy and start somewhere in the middle there with 1ml twice daily of the product that you are using (I am not familiar with Edison Cannabis, however we do offer nurse CBD phone consultations where we can compare products!).

      Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  55. I have a 5lb Chihuahua who is 15, slowed down and tail is tucked – confused by all the options out there – some say 125mg, to 750mg etc – how do I pick the right strength and can you over medicate ? How long on average does it take to see results for pain/aging in tiny dogs.
Are there any risks or side effects ?

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Michelle,

      Great questions!

For smaller pups, we usually recommend starting with HempRx and here is our dosing chart. For your pups weight, we would recommend starting with 3-6 drops (1.5mg-3mg) twice daily.

How quickly you see results can vary! Often you can see results immediately, and other times (for example: more chronic conditions), it can take upwards to 1-2 weeks to begin seen results. It also depends on the dosing that works best for your pup – we always recommend starting at the low end and working up (ideally finding the lowest effective dose).

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  56. Hi,

I have a 7 year old English Golden Retriever with arthritis in his elbow and hip. He’s been on CBD oil, but I want to make sure that I am giving him the correct dose. He weighs ~90 pounds. We give him NuLeaf Naturals CBD oil 1450mg/30ml, which has 2.4 mg for 1 drop. Their pet bottle says if your pet weighs over 75lbs to give 8+ drops 1-2 times a day and the directions for use say 2-3 drops per 20lbs. So, is it appropriate to give our dog 9 drops two times a day?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Renee,

I am so sorry to hear that your pup has been experiencing elbow arthritis!

We recommend starting with 0.50mg/kg of CBD twice daily. For your pup’s weight, this is 20mg twice daily. It sounds like that would be approximately 8 drops of the product that you are using! You could absolutely double this dose if needed!

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  57. Hey everyone, my dog was recently diagnosed with cancer and was wondering about giving him cbd oil. I’ve done some research and found out that I need thc as well. Just wondering on potency and how much is safe to give. He weighs 116 lbs

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Mike,

I’m so sorry to hear about your pup’s recent cancer diagnosis!

We’ve actually seen CBD only be helpful for cancer patients, and there are new studies emerging showing that CBD itself has anti-cancer properties. Great news!

For large pups, we use HempRx Forte (the bottle is over twice as large and it’s double the concentration – making it last longer and easier for dosing). For cancer patients, Dr. Angie usually starts with 0.50mg/kg twice daily and works up to 1mg/kg twice daily.

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  58. I have a 13.5 yr old maltese who weighs 10.2 lbs and has an autoimmune disease called Evan’s Syndrome. He has been treated with prednisone for the last 4 months, but the side effects are starting to kill him. Hes experiencing extreme nausea and vomiting. We have lowered his prednisone to 2.5mg twice a day and started him on 11:1 of cbd with thc twice a day. We give him .5ml x2 a day roughly equaling 5.5mg of cbd with 1/2mg of thc. His nausea and vomiting has not stopped yet on day 3 of administration. are we giving him the correct dosage to reduce nausea and help with inflammation? Thanks!!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Sara,

I am so sorry that your sweet pup is struggling.

We use CBD only products, so I’m unable to guide with the dosing your CBD/THC product. However, for CBD, you could even double the 5.5mg and see if this increase helps.

Please keep us posted. Big hugs.

      Warmly,
      Claire

  59. Lisa Scarbrough

My dog is 75 lbs. My mind is spinning on trying to calculate how may mg to give her. Can you assist? Your help is appreciated.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Lisa,

      It can get confusing!

Here is our dosing chart. For a 75 pound pup, we would recommend starting with 8-16mg of CBD twice daily.

      Hope this helps!

      Warmly
      Claire

  60. Please help! My head is spinning lol

My dog is 75lbs and the CBD oil that I got has a concentration of 10.3mg/ml .

How much would I give my girl per day?

    Thank you!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Kim!

Here is our dosing chart. For a 75 pound pup, we would recommend starting with 8-16mg of CBD twice daily. Based off of the concentration of your product, you would start with 0.75ml-1.5ml twice daily.

      Hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  61. I have an 11 year old chihuahua. She ranges between 3.5 and 3.7 lbs. I bought a bottle of pet cbd oil, for anxiety, 200mg cbd in a 15 ml bottle. What should her dose be?

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Amy,

      Thank you for reaching out!

This is a great question. Here is our dosing chart. For your little pup’s weight, we would recommend starting with 0.25mg-0.50mg twice daily. Does your bottle let you know how many MGs are in a mL?

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  62. I have a 70lb. Dog and a 250mg. bottle of Pet CBD oil made by WI Hemp Scientific.

  63. Hello! My dog recently stopped going up the stairs and jumping up on anything. He’s almost 10 and i can tell he’s uncomfortable and I want to try this first. He’s about 15 pounds. I just purchased CBD oil to put in his food. It is 300mg and 30mL, 10mg per 1mL. Can you help me out please?
Thank you so much for all this information! I just want him to be comfortable again and I really don’t want to medicate him with pain killers.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Leah,

Thank you so much for reaching out!

CBD can be a game changer for our animals with arthritis.

Here is our dosing chart. For a 15 pound pup, we would recommend starting with 1.5-3mg twice daily. So, it sounds like you could start with 0.15-0.30ml twice daily.

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Fabianni,

      Thank you for reaching out!

Here is our dosing chart. For a 35kg (77lb) pup, we would recommend starting with 9-18mg of CBD twice daily.

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  64. I just bought a bottle of HempRX oil, and am wondering how to administer it. For my (55 lb) dog, I will to start out with 10 drops, 2x a day.

Any suggestions on how to administer it? I tried putting some drops in a pill pouch, but he spat that out. My fear is that I’ll put it on food, and he’ll reject it (and I would have wasted the oil and the food).

Typically I would inject something like this (he takes a prescribed liquid NSAID) between his cheek and gums, but trying to get the dosage from the embedded dropper (which would be between .25 and .5ml) is inexact, and I don’t know how successful I will be “injecting” it all from the dropper to his cheek/gums.

    Thanks.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Todd,

      Great question!

Usually the easiest method of administration is placing the drops directly onto your pup’s food. However, I understand your concern. One thought is using something very high value just for the CBD (something like tuna or chicken, something very novel).

Some folks do have success administering directly into their mouth using the dropper as well.

Will you keep us posted on what you find to be successful, or if you need more help?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  65. Hi
On another reply, you state that for an 80 lb. dog, it’s ok to give 9-18mg of CBD. I use the 250mg strength and I tend to measure by drops. How many drops would that be? (I’m dosing her 2x a day)
    Thanks!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Sandra,

      Good question!

Are you using the HempRx or a different product? If you are using HempRx, then there is 0.50mg/drop. That would mean 9-18mg would equal 18-36 drops twice daily. If you are using a different product, it depends on what the dosing is in each drop.

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  66. Hi, I have a 32 lb mini labradoodle that suffers from anxiety during storms and fireworks. I purchased 1000mg/30ml cbd oil and am juat having a heck of a time figuring out how much to give him. There is 1.7mg in one of their drops. Is 1-2 drops for the situation what I would be using?

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Donna,

      It can certainly feel confusing!

We would recommend starting with 0.25mg/kg twice daily, which for your pup, is 3.5mg twice daily. So, it sounds like you could absolutely start with 2 drops twice a day! If needed, you could work up to 0.50mg/kg twice daily (that would be 7mg twice daily).

      I hope this helps!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  67. We have a 12 1/2 year old 4lb Yorkie. She has issues with her hide hips, knees and a disk issue towards her back half. I want to start her on CBD. My question is: she had been on prednisone .5 mg for a year now. Once I start the CBD should I stop the prednisone? We live in East TN and I have not asked our vet yet, but don’t expect him to agree with CBD. This area is very western medicine. Thank you for your opinion.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Jeff,

      Excellent question!

We have not seen any issues when giving Prednisone and CBD together, so that’s great news for your girl!

For small pups, we usually recommend starting with HempRx and our dosing chart is here.

If you give CBD a try for your pup, will you keep us posted on how it helps?

      Warmly,
      Claire

      Warmly,

  68. I’m trying to figure this out and any help would be amazing! My German Shepherd has seizures and was told by my vet that cbd might help. Trying to figure out how much to give him. He is a bit over 70lbs (32kg) and I got a 30ml bottle of 1000mg. The place I bought it from said 3-4 drops 2 times a day but that seems like a lot?

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Chris,

      Thank you for reaching out!

Here is our dosing chart! For your size pup, we would recommend starting with 7-15mg of CBD twice daily.

I hope that this helps! Keep us posted on how CBD works for your pup’s seizures!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  69. I WOULD LIKE TO START GIVING CBD TO MY 14 YEAR OLD BOSTON TERRIER WHO HAS CUSHING AND SEVERE ARTHRITIS IN HER FRONT LEGS. WITH TAKING VETEROYL IS GIVING CBD OK?? OR SHOULD I STOP THE VETEROYL WHILE I TRY THE CBD??

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Sandy,

Thank you so much for reaching out!

We have not seen any negative interactions when giving Vetoryl and CBD together.

I hope this helps! Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  70. Lauren Pointer

Hi there! Thank you for the helpful information on dosage. Do you think my 10 year old Yorkie who developed a murmur in the past 6 months, would benefit from having CBD oil? I hear it’s good for the heart for anti-inflammatory properties.

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Lauren,

      Thank you for reaching out!

We’ve not used CBD as a snd alone agent for heart murmurs or heart disease. Probably the next best step is an ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram), if you haven’t had this done yet!

      I hope that this helps!

      Warmly
      Claire

Regarding dosage… Yes, my head is spinning a bit!!
To be sure I have this correct…
I just purchased oil that says it has 3mg CBD per serving and the serving size is 15 drops, so that would be 1mg per every 5 drops. My dog weighs about 80 lbs. If I double you 40 lb example above, I would be giving him 8mg, so 40 drops? That seems excessive. I should add that this CBD was purchased at the grocery store for human consumption, which would assume at least 150 lbs, I would suppose. Please help if you have any insight on this. Thanks in advance!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Jennifer,

Here is our dosing chart, which may help! For an 80 pound pup, we would recommend starting with 9-18mg of CBD twice daily. For the products with a low concentration, it can take a lot of drops to reach the desired dosage. I hope this helps (it can get so confusing!).

Since the product is for human consumption, just make sure too that the product doesn’t have any extra favoring or essential oils that may be less desirable for pups.

I hope this helps! Keep us posted!

      Warmly,
      Claire

  72. I have a bottle of CBD Hemp oil 2000mg/30 ml. I was told there is 66mg per ml of CBD. I have a dog who has severe anxiety when going outside and worse when he goes to the groomer or the vet. How many drops should I give him a day? Thank you!

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Jayson,

      Here is our dosing chart.

The dose would depend on how much your pup weigh! The column on the far left of our dosing chart will show the MG dose that your pup would need to receive, twice daily.

I really hope the CBD helps your pup’s anxiety. Will you keep us posted?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  73. We adopted our Pit Bull/ Mastif mix 8 months ago-80 lbs. He has serious vision issues and is partially blind in one eye. He is anywhere from 6 to 8 yrs old. 3 months after we had him he got Leptospirosis and was in2 different hospitals for 7 days- serious liver, kidney issues. He survived but has had periodic behavior issues since then. A day care facility which we had to remove him from thought he had a seizure after an incident of snapping at another dog. He has also been aggressive towards dog walkers who he was fine with before he got sick. He is absolutely loving and non aggressive with my husband and I but we have to find a place to board him periodically so we can assist in helping with 2 sets of elderly parents. We have had him assessed for training but training that does not appear to be the issue. We have spent ALOT of $ on this guy’s care and can’t afford any other diagnostic type tests. Might CBD help? What type or dosage?

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Jane,

      Thank you for reaching out!

I am so sorry to hear about the struggles you are experiencing with your pup, and that a trainer wasn’t ablate help! I wonder if another trainer (second opinion, so to speak) may be worth a shot?

We’ve absolutely seen CBD help with anxiety and other behavioral concerns. It would likely work best coupled with other therapies as well. For large pups, we recommend the HempRx Forte and our dosing chart is here.

If you give it a try, will you keep us posted on how it helps?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  74. Hi, I want to try this for my 13 year old King Charles Cavalier who has arthritis and wobbly legs and weighs 8.2kg but am worried about what type to give, how much, and the best place to purchase this from

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Frankie,

Thank you for reaching out, these are all good concerns to have.

It sounds like CBD could absolutely help your arthritic pup.

For medium sized dogs, we usually recommend HempRx Forte. It is the same formulation as the HempRx, however the Forte bottle is over twice as large and is double the concentration (making it more economical in the long run and easier to dose!).

Here is our dosing chart. For a 8.2kg (18.04#) pup, we would recommend starting with 2-4 drops of the HempRx Forte twice daily (or 4-8 drops of the HempRx).

I hope this information is helpful! If you try the CBD, will you keep us posted on how it helps?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  75. My dog has had wobblers surgery and a spinal stroke. He is 145 pounds and your dosing chart does not cover that weight. He walks about 85% normal and is 7 yrs old this month. I feel he could benefit from your products but am not sure which one. I know he has some inflammation and pain. I am not sure because of his size and the amounts he would need if I could ever afford it but if you have some thoughts that would be great. Thank you,

    1. Dr. Angie Krause, DVM

      Hi Denise,

I know we already touched base, but I wanted to follow up here as well! 🙂

Thank you so much for reaching out! I am so sorry to hear the struggles your pup has gone through, and am also so glad that he has 85% mobility back. You are doing a great job.

He’s a big boy! Unfortunately, the larger the pup, the more expensive the product. For large dogs, we definitely recommend the HempRx Forte. It is the same formulation as the HempRx. However, the bottle is over twice as big and it’s double the concentration (making it more economical, but also making it easier to dose!).

The dosing we recommend is starting with -0.25mg-0.50mg/kg twice daily. However, you can go up to 3mg/kg if needed (however, we recommend finding the lowest effect dose). For a 145# pup, the 0.25mg/kg dose comes to 16mg or 16 drops (0.50ml) of the Forte twice daily. A 0.50mg/kg dose would come to 32mg or 32 drops (1ml) twice daily.

I hope that this information helps! If you try the CBD, will you keep us posted!?

      Warmly,
      Claire

  76. I have started my 13 yo labradoodle on hempRx forte cbd oil. She was diagnosed with Cushings disease in early September, started on Vetoryl, and has panting and weakness /discomfort in her hind quarters. She weighs 36 lbs and I started her on 4 drops 2 times a day one week ago. So far i haven’t noticed an improvement in her discomfort and wondered how long I should wait until increasing the drops. Also when I do, should I gradually increase by 1 drop a day,-so 5 drops in am and 4 in the pm.? Thank you for your guidance.

    1. Jacquie Edie, Veterinary Nurse for BHV

      Hi Joanne,

I am so sorry to hear that your labradoodle is panting and uncomfortable. I know how difficult this must be for you both!

I think a week is a fair trial to see if your girl will respond to the low end of the dose range. You can certainly try gradually increasing her dose until you find the right amount for her. It is safe to increase by 1 drop twice daily, every other day until you find the lowest effective dose. It is also ok to start increasing by 1 drop each day if you prefer. If her symptoms are worse during the day, I would recommend giving the increased dose in the morning. If her symptoms are worse at night you could increase her evening dose. There is a wide safety margin with CBD oil so it is difficult to give too much. Some dogs take up to 5mg/kg. The main concern of course is the cost so we recommend starting at the low end of the dose range and work up until you find what works for your girl.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

      Kindly,
      Jacquie
